General Information.
15 month old Black and Tan German Shepherd Dog.  Male.  Neutered.  Working lines.  85lbs.  Registered with AKC.

Personality
Very social, assertive, active, and friendly.  He loves to play and is eager to please.  He is a family dog.  His people are his family and he is happiest when he is with them.  He loves to be where the people are.  If me and my wife are in separate parts of the house he will find a place to lay down where he can see us both, or he will rotate between our locations every few minutes so he knows what's going on.  Loves to play games like hide and seek and fetch.  He is also  attached to his chew toys and he will carry one around to entertain himself if we are being too boring.  He is very alert to what we are doing and saying at all times.  He is usually very quick to respond to commands.
He has a high prey drive and he is dominant.  He responds very well to calm-assertive behavior in people and other dogs.  He shows very dominant behavior to any dog that shows fear or aggression.  We have never seen him display any kind of aggression to other animals or people. No snarling, raised hackles, fear biting or anything else.  We have never seen him display any fear of anything.  Overbearing playfulness and curiosity are his style.

Training
He had 8 weeks of professional training in basic verbal commands and hand signals.  He responds equally well to both.  Those commands are Sit, Stay, Come, Down, Leave it, Jump Up, Jump Down, and Shake.  Others he knows are Sit Up (beg), Find it, and Go To Your Room.  He has good leash manners.  We had Heel down pat last summer but we are now out of practice.  My fault, not the dogs.  He has good house manners.  He knows not to counter-surf, rough-house, crotch sniff, beg at the table or get on the furniture.  He is gentle with babies and small children.  He very rarely barks inside the house for any reason.  Loves his kennel and does great in cars and the backs of trucks (in a kennel or on a leash). Outside (alone) he barks at anything that moves.  People used to take short cuts through the woods along the back fence but they have all abandoned that practice.

Fun Facts
Loves to swim, play, chew, chase cats, fetch, sniff out, dig up and chew to pieces.  High prey drive.  Will search under cars while on walks- just checking for cats.  LOVES to play with other dogs.  Any dog, every dog, even long after he has worn out his welcome.  Loves to chase deer.  He even caught one once.  He managed to pin down a young buck and was climbing on his back and licking his face.  Does well with horses.  Bothers cows. Has not been tried with chickens but it would probably take some work.  Not bother by vacuums, doorbells, gunshot, heavy rain, thunder, snow or doorbells.  Won't jump off a dock yet but will ride in a boat and on a jet ski.  He is an extremely good-looking and well-behaved dog.  When we go on walks or into a store with our dog and our infant, the dog gets more complements than the baby.  And we have a darn cute baby.
Not so fun facts
When bored and lonely he will chew.  Especially plastic.  If he is left inside or outside by himself all day he will find something plastic and destroy it.  Garbage bins, phone lines, siding, tools, buckets of laundry detergent, linoleum....  If he is left alone for a long time you must be careful what you leave in his reach- which is substantial.  Our rule of thumb is that if he can see it, he can probably reach it somehow.  He is a very active animal and needs some excitement and excessive everyday.  If he doesn't get a walk for more than two or three days we have to keep a very close eye on him lest he goes and walks himself, or takes out his energy on a part of the house.
He is tall enough to jump a four foot fence.  He is smart enough to unlock a gate.  If those both fail, he is strong enough to tear a gate off its hinges.
Is this the right dog for you?
If you are gone all day and get home too tired to go for a walk and play- this dog is not for you.
If you want a guard dog that will attack people and hold down the fort while you are away- this dog is not for you.
If you have never owned a dog before, live in an apartment, already own several dogs or cats, or have a serious physical impairment- this dog is probably not for you.

If you want a companion animal that will worship you all its life- this dog might be for you.
If you can live with the knowledge that your dog is smarter, stronger, and better looking than you- this dog might be for you.
If you enjoy long walks, being licked in the face, and complements- this dog might be for you.
If you can accept the fact that one day you will come home to find your dog has pulled the tires off your car and stuffed them inside your pillows and drank all your beer (it literally could happen) and still be okay with that!- then this dog is probably for you.
If you have a noisy chaotic house full of people and activity this dog will be in total nirvana.
